Au Courant Black Currantini

Friday, October 30, 2009

I am behind a bit and since the next two had some amazing similarities, I will double up the entries.

Kool Aid Dude

Yeeaaaah! Drink it!

Currant vodka, sherry and crème de cassis.   For some reason it was extremely difficult to find crème de cassis, I did not have immediate access to a Bevmo, and checked out about four other stores.    I remember cassis being more readily available in the past – especially in the late 80’s and early 90’s when kir royales were so popular (kir royale is champagne with a drop or two of crème de cassis in it, quite tasty).  The Currantini smelled and tasted exactly like grape Kool-Aid, even the color (owing to the crème de cassis) was grape Kool-Aid like.   I never cared for Kool-Aid.   By now that should surprise no one.   I am not sure what else I can say about this.   Don’t let your kids drink it, of course.

The Berrytini tasted like a bizarre mixture of the aforementioned grape Kool-Aid and cough syrup.   It was made of currant flavored vodka, raspberry eau-de-vie and a fresh raspberry garnish.   I tried to finish it, but the cough syrup taste brought back far too many unpleasant memories from my childhood.

Hopefully Saturday’s and Sunday’s ventures into the martini realm will yield more pleasant results.  And I am sure the weekend will bring more experiments of the cocktail nature.

Thanks for stopping by,
